Vamos! Let’s get together for delicious food and conversation (but, really – it’s all about the food). Las Carretas Mexican Restaurant is the perfect place to achieve both of these goals.
This relatively new restaurant stuck in the corner of the University Plaza shopping center (on the corner of University Blvd. and Goldenrod Road) just next to Brooklyn Water Bagel is an apparent hotspot for folks looking for an awesome meal…and possibly to see and be seen. All you have to do is take a drive by and you’ll likely see a line out the door or folks hanging outside waiting for a table.
The interior of the restaurant is fairly large, with the chunk of the seating being up front by the main entrance. There’s also a healthy amount of seating that surrounds nearly all of the large bar located in the back of the space.
It was fairly crowded when we and our group dipped in recently for dinner early on a Friday evening. After putting in a request for a table we all headed to the bar and started out with a tasty margarita, as one does. 🍹 WARNING: The drinks at his place are no joke so don’t say you didn’t know.
The Mezcal Margarita is a concoction of Montelobos Mezcal tequila with Coinreau liquer, fresh pressed lime, and agave nectar. Definitely refreshing twice over!
It actually didn’t take long for a table to open up for our party so once that was available we headed over and all took a hard look at the very extensive Las Carretas menu.
The decision-making on this one was pretty overwhelming if we’re honest, so at some point we just had to make a decision. The table got so much food we’re not even sure what happened, but we went with the Mar y Tierra dish located under the “Steaks” portion of the menu and would one hundo opt for this dish again on a future visit. It’s comprised of char-grilled steak and six grilled shrimp, topped with cheese dip (that is not a typo). The steak was so flavorful and cooked to perfection (not at all dry or chewy) and the shrimp were tender and actually the perfect size and portion for this dish. Like with most of the main options on the menu this one is accompanied with rice, black beans, and tortillas.
Here’s a closer look at what our group ordered:
We won’t go through all of the specific details of each (yawn – plus we can’t remember them all!) but here are a few of the dishes brought to the table for our party:
- The Enchiladas del Mar dish found under the “Enchiladas Tradicionales” section of the menu. That’s three hot enchiladas fill with grilled salmon, shrimp, and crab meat along with grilled peppers and onions, topped with Mozzarella cheese and cheese dip. This sides on this one are a little bit of a shakeup: Rice, zucchini, yellow squash, carrots, and broccoli. Noms!
- Crab Dip. Pretty self-explanatory.
- Lettuce Lovers Tacos. The guest has the option of three char-grilled chicken or steak (🍤 for a minimal upgrade) tacos in a lettuce shell, topped with queso fresco, mushrooms, corn, and grilled onions. Of course it also comes with rice and beans.
As far as a “next visit” (yes – we’re already plotting and planning) there are a few dishes we’ve got our eyes on: The Chicken Cucumber Salad; the Shrimp Fajitas; the Polle con Mole; and the Enchiladas Mazatlan.
Now that we’ve revisited that entire experience we’re ready to go back for more. Check out the Las Carretas menu to pick out what you’ll have when you pay a visit to this place.
