One of our very favorite delis used to be located in Ivanhoe Village but relocated to not-to-far Mt. Dora not too long ago. We’re talking about Backhaus German Bakery & Deli. Well, we recently had the opportunity to visit their new location and it is quite charming.
If you ever visited the Ivanhood store and then visit this new location, you most definitely note there is a major difference in the actual size of the bakery.
If you’ve never had the pleasure of visiting either Backhaus location then here’s a very brief summary of the deliciousness they have to offer: Pastries and sweets (which are both beautiful and one of the things Backhaus is most known for); cakes; bread; and sandwiches (authentic and build-your-own). You can also read our original post here.
While the photos we captured certainly don’t do the items nearly any justice you get an idea of the deliciousness waiting for customers at Backhaus.
Backhaus’s website has beautiful pics for all of the items listed above so be sure to pop over there to have a peek.
Fun fact we uncovered while poking around on the Backhaus website for a bit:
“ In the ancient times, there were no stores,
shops and of course bakeries were unheard of.
The ordinary people cooked and baked in their own homes on open fires.
When the Roman Empire ruled over Europe in the 17th century,
baking inside private homes was no longer permitted,
due to fire hazards and extensive wood consumption.
Consequently every township built a baking facility for their community.
It was called “Backhaus” i.e. baking house.”
Just fyi if you plan on heading over to Mt. Dora to visit Backhaus, they are only open for business Wednesday through Sunday.
