Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour

There are some things that are “touristy” in Central Florida that are just worth doing if you live here. One of my very favorite things to do is the Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour, which is technically the oldest tourist attraction in the area (sorry if I get the exact verbiage wrong but this is a talking point on the tour).

Over the past few years I’ve been on the boat tour several times, typically a go-to when folks are in town visiting the area. I feel like it’s something that’s very unique to our area and not something most folks get to experience where they live.

“On any given tour, participants may observe large cranes swooping waterside to snag a large fish or a lazy alligator languishing on a nearby bank. An occasional water skier or racing shell full of crew members from the areas private liberal arts college, Rollins, are also enjoyable sideshows for tour goers.” – ScenicBoatTours.com

The tours run every day of the year through the Winter Park chain of lakes with the exception of Christmas. On the tour I love that you’re probably going to get to see a family or group of folks skiing or tubing (I secretly enjoy seeing people bite it or get bounced off their innertube!), learning about the history at Rollins College as the boat glides by, or catching a photo sesh at the beautiful Kraft Azalea Garden. Did you have any idea all of this is right in our own backyard?

Here are a few things you should know before you start your planning or head over for your excursion:

  • You can only pay with cash or check. This one is a little hard for me to swallow, and threw me and a group I was with off when we arrived once a while back. It’s quite inconvenient and a annoying if you don’t know this ahead of time because…well, who carries around that much cash and let’s be real honest – who in the heck carries around a checkbook?! That said – now you know.
  • Tours depart every hour from 10am-4pm. If you arrive close to the top of the hour and all tours are full, you’ll just be bumped to the next available boat that can accommodate your party. Something to be aware of if you’re with a large group or visiting during a busy time of year.
  • The last tour of the day departs at 4pm. Personally I think it would be kinda cool to experience the tours at night, but I’m sure there are some laws or even business practices that prohibit the tours from doing that.

The Scenic Boat Tour offers a fleet of six 18 passenger pontoon boats. Admission is $14.00 for adults and $7.00 for children Taxes Incl.(ages 2 through 11) under 2 are free.
