It feels good to give back sometimes, doesn’t it? We recently took some time out to do some volunteering with Habitat for Humanity of Orlando & Osceola County (@habitatorlandoosceola on Instagram). 🧰🛠🔩⚙️🧱 While it was certainly getting hot out as summer is creeping toward us, it felt pretty cool (like that? 😉) to know we were helping construct a home for a family to build a life in.
I’ve volunteered with Habitat in years past and one of the things I really enjoy about it with this organization is you never know what you’re gonna get. What I mean by that is there’s such a wide array of things that need to be done when it comes to building and maintaining a home that the duties are endless. For example, on my last volunteer visit several years ago I was doing paint touch ups and cleaning in an established home. This time ’round I was actually helping “build” a home for a Habitat family. Check out some of what the day consisted of:
Even though we were doing actual construction and using a variety of tools — including power saws, nail guns, etc. — you don’t have to be a pro. There’s certainly someone nearby who’s way more experienced at it and willing to show you how to use everything. That said, you don’t have to do anything you’re not comfortable with.
Here are a few fun facts* about the Habitat for Humanity Greater Orlando & Osceola County and its recent accomplishments:
- Built and sold 29 homes
- Nearly 6,500 hours of sweat equity was contributed by future Habitat homeowners
- Close to 23k volunteer hours were contributed
The Neighborhood Revitalization (NR) program has changed the lives of more than 200 families in our community through painting and repairs, making it possible for them to stay in their homes.
