BTW in Taveres: Food Worth Traveling For

Tavares is still considered Central Florida, right? Sure it is, and therefore felt it our duty to report on a great little culinary experience we had in this Central Florida town. I recently decided to take a little day trip to the Mount Dora area. You all have done that before, right? Walk around the area window shopping, visiting museums, etc. Well on the way home my travel buddy and I quickly decided we were hun-gry (not so much quickly because I’m always hungry, but I wanted to try out someplace new on the way back to Orlando).

There was a little deliberation about where to go but we landed on BTW because – well, BTW is “Burgers Tacos Waffles.” All of the yes, please! ✋ Not only because it’s burgers, tacos, and waffles (duh) but because of BTW’s “mission”:

OUR GOAL IS TO MAKE FOOD FUN WITH A SEASONALLY ROTATING FOOD TRUCK STYLE MENU. THINK OF OUR THEME AS IF WE TOOK THREE DIFFERENT FOOD TRUCKS, THAT MAKE EXCELLENT, THOUGHTFUL, AND QUALITY STREET FOOD, AND PUT THEM IN A BRICK AND MORTAR BUILDING.”

Food should be fun and if it’s obvious this is what a place is all about I’m definitely going to give them a try at least once.

So one of the things I really, really, like about BTW is how they put a twist on some “average” foods. For example, poutine is on the appetizer menu. Now we all know this is a favorite originated by our Canadian neighbors and it’s certainly an acquired taste (have you acquired a taste for it?) but BTW creates their own version with your choice of waffle fries or tater tots as the base. And brussel sprouts? You bet you can find them here, on the “shareables” section of the menu, only here they are accompanied by sriracha honey for dipping. WHA?!

A few of the other “starters” you can try out before diving into your main dish:

  • Fried Cheese Curds
  • Nacho Fries (with chorizo & beef, jalapeno beer cheese)
  • Kick N’ Bitty Buffalo Chicken Fries

Full yet? Well we haven’t even begun, so buckle up….

I really wanted to try the waffles during this maiden visit but am saving that for the next one. This time around between myself and my dining companion we went with the following:

  • Tacos. Tacos, tacos, tacos! Three, actually. Those featured immediately above are the KBQ (Korean BBQ), Barbacoa Pork, and Gringo. I won’t bore you with all of the specific details of each one so if any of them look as yummy to you as they actually were, check out the “Tacos” section of the BTW menu.
  • Brussel Sprouts (obvy). As I mentioned earlier the brussel sprouts make an appearance on the appetizer section of the menu but we kept them to come along with our main dishes. In addition the sauce for dipping the sprouts are sprinkled with cheese.

Aside from all of the delicious and unique dishes BTW offers on their main menu, they have weekly specials like Taco Tuesday and discouns on waffles on Wednesdays. Of course, always check the BTW website or call prior to showing up just to make sure these deals are still on.

If you’re planning on heading out to BTW sometime soon because of reading this awesome post just be aware the restaurant is closed on Mondays. You can visit their website for a full list of hours of operation.

BTW (by the way), we’re thinking another meaning for the acronym BTW could be [un]Buckle That Waist!
