Orlando Critical Mass isn’t as harsh or as intense as it may seem based on name alone. It’s not a mandatory, city-wide church service either. “Critical Mass” is a community event made perfect for anyone who enjoys getting out on the streets, loves The City Beautiful, riding a bike and connecting with their community. I suppose for some it might be a religious experience, but hey…more power to ’em.
Every last Friday of the month, hundreds of Central Floridians gather together in the early evening to ride their bikes several miles.
“Critical Mass is the one of the largest, on-going, world-wide, community bicycle rides. We aim to safely promote the awareness of alternative forms of transportation in the Downtown Orlando area.
We meet at Loch Haven Park every last Friday of the month at 5:30pm to take back the streets! To promote peace and harmony between bikes and cars, to “share” the road, and also to help make people feel more comfortable while riding with traffic.”
I’m not sure how much more I can describe to sell you on the concept and the experience. I’ve done Critical Mass a couple of times and strongly encourage all to try it at least once. Go with a friend or two, meet them at the starting point, or head over on your own just to grab some “me time.” You’ll [hopefully] get to see some new parts of the city, may meet some neighbors, and never know what sort of long-lasting friends you could end up with.
Now, the Critical Mass group gathers at Loch Haven Park, right near the Orlando Science Center. As mentioned earlier you can bring your own bike (racing, mountain, whatever), rent one from one of the nearby bike stores, or grab one from one of Orlando’s bike sharing programs (Juice, Lime).
There is typically a Facebook Event for each ride, so you can mark yourself as “Interested” and/or “Going” to pre-connect with others planning on going and riding. And if you’re still on the fence about the whole darn thing you can view pic from previous rides.
