“You have a baby. In a bar.” We all know that famous line delivered by Reese Witherspoon’s character in the film “Sweet Home Alabama.” Probably even if you’ve never seen the movie you’ve heard it. I feel like we can deliver a similar line–perhaps it won’t become quite so known, though–about Castle Church Brewing: “You have a beer. In a church.”
Yes – you heard me correctly. The recently-opened Castle Church Brewing here in the Central Florida area is both a church and a brewery. For beer. Isn’t that just delicious? Now, some of you may be scratching your heads and wondering, “What tha?” And it’s certainly a valid reaction. That being said, the whole concept is quite intriguing. In doing some research about this initiative, its overall mission, and the association with the Lutheran Evangelical Church, I got a little overwhelmed. Quite honestly I don’t want to muddy the waters and try to dissect it all myself, and would prefer you visit the Castle Church Brewing website to take a look around and learn some things for yourself. That being said, here’s a little something that stuck out to me:
Beer is our passion. But as a spiritual community, we exist for people first.”
Let that sit and brew with you. 😉
I went to the official grand opening of the brewery weekend before last and here are some of the moments I was able to capture during that visit:
You can even take a little bit of Castle Church home with you:
One of the things that really stuck with me during my visit I like was the gray was already figured out on the receipt. Hey – sometimes we just don’t want to do math. And for those who might kick back a few beers while visiting, well…they probably just don’t want to try to figure out a tip.
In addition to the brewing factor, Castle Church holds regular services and is involved in community engagement via special events and outreach.
Bible + Beer. Allowing God’s voice to penetrate our souls through regular Bible reading is important and essential to nourish the soul. We read and meditate on Scripture in this low-commitment event offered every Tuesday and Thursday.
Beer + Yoga. Practice Hatha Flow Yoga followed by a pint with friends on weeknights in a craft brewery. Beyond a pose or series of poses, Yoga is about the mind, body, and soul connection.
While reviewing their rather extensive website it seems like there’s always something going on at Castle Church. Check it out and see if there’s something you’d like to get involved in.
Also, I’m not gonna lie – because it’s the truth and mostly because I’m sitting here writing about a church – but the swag they sell on their site is pretty rad. They have yoga leggings, a towel, and a hoodie.
