Orange Avenue to Become Two-Way Street (?)

Word on the street is Orange Avenue in downtown Orlando might be reworked to change from a one-way to a two-way street. Ok, it’s nothing totally concrete as of yet, I just wanted to say “word on the street.” However, this is definitely something being talked about, specifically in the North Quarter part of town, near where downtown bleeds into Ivanhoe Village/Ivanhood.

Honestly, I originally learned about this from my building’s HOA newsletter (I reside in this part of town). Upon hearing this I started a little bit of research because I just couldn’t imagine how it would be implemented. Two primary resources I located confirming this conversation are:

Downtown Orlando, North Quarter District: One-Way to Two Way Conversion Study

Orange Avenue has been a one-way street for as long as I can recall, and I’ve been in the area for 20 years. So what would such a significant change mean? Well, changing the road and its current composite would affect pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers on the street, obviously. It could also bring new awareness and revenue to businesses in the area.

This still has yet to be approved. That’s pending approval of Phase II of this study. And no word that I could track down of when that is set to take place.

What do you think? Would you be down with a two-way Orange Avenue?

  1. The two-waying of Orange and Magnolia was the subject of a study by two urban design/planning firms, and was also the subject of several public meetings and workshops held months ago. Traffic, transit, cyclists, and pedestrians were all considered, and comments from the public were incorporated into the planning consultant’s final recommendation to the city. I’m not sure how you missed these meetings. They were well publicized.

    • Thanks for stopping by and sharing your input, J. Gordan – it’s most definitely appreciated.

I would never want to be responsible for disseminating inaccurateinformation about anything, particularly something that would impact so many of the great residents of Orlando and Central Florida. That being said, I did a fair amount of research online and only came back with info that speaks to there being another Phase (II) of this project, which has yet to transpire, and would further lead to a decision about this potential two-way project. Did I miss something as it relates to this next Phase? If so, please be so kind as to share so I can update our readers.

According to the Fox 35 article (http://www.fox35orlando.com/news/local-news/orlando-considers-changing-some-one-way-streets) dated July of this year posted in the original post, “…If the City Commission approves Phase 2 of the study….”

Thank you, again, for stopping by. I’ll look forward to hearing about any updates!
