Volunteering at Ronald McDonald House Charities

This past week I had the great opportunity to join some of the folks I work with to volunteer at one of Central Florida’s Ronald McDonald House Charities. Did you know there are two located in Central Florida?

If you’re not familiar with this organization, they’re really doing some great things. Essentially, the charity provides temporary living conditions for the families of children who are seeking treatment in local hospitals. The only real requirements are:

  • The child must be 20-years-old or younger
  • The child must currently be receiving treatment at a Central Florida hospital (list of hospitals can be found here)
  • The child’s physician must send a referral to the Ronald McDonald House

Getting back to the volunteering, the charity is constantly looking for folks to come in and prepare or provide a good dinner for the families staying there. My co-workers and I made some awesome food, and prepared and served it. Afterward, we got a tour of the facility.

You may notice in one of the photos a crazy amount of pop tops, from cans. Ronald McDonald House actually subsidizes some of their operational costs by recycling pop tops. Can you believe saving up enough of these can result in a decent amount of cash? The charity even offers businesses and individuals tiny houses to use as receptacles for pop tops. Pretty awesome, huh?

If you’re interested in setting up a time to volunteer with your co-workers, friends or family, check-out the info here. I highly recommend it.
