Tracking Crime in Your Neighbhorhood

Crime is an important topic to any citizen. At least it should be. And if you’re a Central Florida resident you know crime has been at an all-time high for the past couple of years. In fact, 2006 was one of the highest crime years in recent history, and gave Orlando the title as “one of the most violent cities in America.” Definitely not something to be proud of.

It’s my personal belief that knowledge and education can help combat this violence. And residents have a tool to do just that. Local news organization Orlando Sentinel has a cool feature on their website today, called “How safe is your Orlando street?” It’s a great resource for citizens to research recent crime activity in their neighborhood.

The database offers searches by:

-> Street
-> Type of crime (violent crimes, property crimes, other)
-> Neighborhood/zip code
-> Date range (when crimes have occurred)

Here’s what the search widget looks like:

There’s even a RSS feed you can subscribe to, so you can receive up-to-date information on crimes in your area. To subscribe simply click on the “Subscribe” tab at the top of the page.

Now I realize this isn’t necessarily the most appealing subject to talk about, but it’s wise to be aware of activities going on in your neighborhood.

Stay educated.

Be aware.
